Diamonds, rubies, and sapphires do not have to be unset to be retipped. They can be retipped in place. All other gemstones must be unset, then the retipping is done and the stones are reset.

Remeber, diamonds are forever, but their settings are not! Periodic maintenance must be performed to maintain the strength of ever-wearing settings.
